This crackdown stems from the tragic MV June Aster fire on September 9, which claimed over 70 lives off the coast of Palawan. While social media rumors quickly blamed an onboard electric vehicle for triggering the blaze, official confirmation is still pending as authorities iron out the details of the policy.

The Bureau of Fire Protection already cleared electric and hybrid vehicles last month, ruling them out as the cause of the MV June Aster disaster. For port officials, that official report should be reason enough for shipping lines to lift their bans. To make that happen, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago confirmed they are actively teaming up with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA). Their goal is simple: get these eco-friendly cars back on the water by proving the initial social media panic was completely unfounded.

Philippine Ports Authority General Manager Jay Santiago argues that banning electric and hybrid vehicles lacks any real, scientific basis. While critics worry that EV batteries pose a severe fire hazard, maritime experts point out that thousands of these vehicles are regularly shipped to the Philippines on cargo vessels without a single incident. According to the official Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) report, the tragic MV June Aster fire was actually sparked by a volatile mix of loosely secured chlorine and asphalt. Rough seas caused the poorly fastened cargo to spill and mix near the stern. From there, a broken ventilation system pumped in hot air, creating the perfect recipe for ignition.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is working with fellow government agencies to clarify why certain

[1

post-213","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-localnews
["GET
